Ares, according to Mythology Unbound, was pretty much a bloodthirsty maniac who fought with the goal of causing as much destruction and death as he possibly could. He is most often depicted as an antagonist of Wonder Woman. The most significant of the love-myths was the tale of his affair with the goddess Aphrodite. Ares, also known as Mars was the God of War and Homicide. In Roman mythology, he has also been referred to as Pavor. Ares is the chaos and destruction of war, found in the middle of the rage and pain of fighting. In Greek literature, he often represents the physical or violent and untamed aspect of war, in contrast to the armored Athena, whose functions as a goddess of intelligence include military strategy and generalship. The etymology of the name Ares means curse or ruin. His bird was the vulture, and his animal was the dog. But Athena is strategic and calm she is the general, guiding the battle and waging the tide against her brother's chaos and destruction. In this piece of art, Ares is the center of attention. Both did not appear again among the gods for some time.
More recently, Ares was honored by NASA who named a ship after him. The Greek god Ares is the most feared and hated of all, yet only possesses men of courage. Mars' symbols are the dog, sword, vulture and bloodshed. He was not welcomed by both gods and mortals in Greek mythology, nor ancient Greeks themselves, well with the few exceptions such as Spartans and the Amazons. She is the goddess of the planning and strategic stuff in a battle. Ares was the Greek god of war and perhaps the most unpopular of all the Olympian gods because of his quick temper, aggressiveness, and unquenchable. Ares is the God of War in Greek Mythology. It is for this reason why Ares' equivalent, Mars, is regarded as the patron god of Rome. Ares is a well know god, but there is one thing that the god of war Mars has in common with him. The one exception seems to be the goddess Aphrodite.
